The button quail chicks I hatched are doing wonderfully. At two weeks old, they’ve gone through the phases of, “let me sleep in your hands ’round the clock,” and the following phase of, “Oh my god! Guys, run! I think she wants to eat us!” They are still mostly in that last phase, but they are starting to come around.
These babies have been enjoying their new sandbox, and I bump their brooder plate up a few turns each day.
I wound up with eight healthy, sweet babies. Speedy babies – whew!
Their mama went broody not long after these lil’ ones hatched. She’s been mostly sitting eggs for a little over a week. She’s a good mama, making spaceship noises at the male to keep him away. I will likely have to put a divider in their bin. The hen laid and gathered seven eggs, and then she stopped laying. It’s really interesting to watch this progress.
I have no idea whether or not she’ll see this through, or if any will hatch. If they do, maybe that bodes well for future generations doing the same.
