We’ve been in a heatwave for a couple of days. Today is set to be the worst of it. I’ve got ice blocks in front of industrial fans in the quail shed. Soon, I’ll put a mini ice block into each hutch level as well, and they’ll get by.
One of my hens was injured in her fear of last night’s wicked thunderstorms. She has a good chance to come through, but could go either way. She’s currently resting.
We lost power during the night. And when it came back on, it went out again. I was ready to put ice in the quail egg mini fridge, but ultimately, that wasn’t necessary. There ought to be plenty of fresh quail eggs at this weekend’s market.
My honey bees have been bearding for the past two days, and I feared the worst during last night’s storms. Thankfully, they have mostly gathered in a respectable beard again today, and they sound like the fans in the quail shed. As long as they can keep it cool in their hives, all is good.
I’m currently drying the garlic my family will need for much of the year. A year without spaghetti, lasagna, chili and other dishes that take garlic is a year of weeping.
There were a few decent potatoes from my humble spud garden. This made good use of a plot that couldn’t seem to sustain anything else. Other than weeds.
Some of the garden loves the heat and the sunshine. Like the water lilies. Some, like the tomatoes, seems to want to split at the seams instead of ripening.
I had to tie and tuck a few tall wildflowers this morning, but it wasn’t too bad. We just need to get to the other side of the heat now.
