Grain Mill for Quail Feed

My adult birds love Nutrena’s NatureWise All Flock feed. This feed gets them off of the high-protein gamebird crumble, but our local store only sells the pellets. What to do? This.

The solution to grinding pelletized feed.

It’s a Victoria brand grain mill. It’s hand-cranked, and it’s mainly made of cast iron. I’ll be using it for our own food from time to time as well.

This mill is adjustable, so it produces the perfect mix of small sizes for my quail. I won’t be limited to musty fusty crumble in the future, although the gamebird crumble is what’s best for chicks.

The gamebird crumble I feed them is 28% protein. Great for growing chicks, and they can eat it without it being ground further.

That much protein is bad for older birds. My understanding is that it can cause gout. Also, it doesn’t offer much calcium.

The All Flock provides more calcium without it being enough to cause health problems for the roosters. It also provides vitamin D, so calcium is better absorbed. I offer Egg Maker and either oyster shell or an oyster shell replacement on the side. We get such pretty, vibrant egg yolks.

The feed smells amazing too. Herbal.

If you’re in an area that’s shy about quail feed, a grain mill is a decent option.
