I’ve got the floor leveled and nailed in place for the new quail shed. The shed will be 8′ by 10′, and it will hold two hutches. There will be nine pens in all, plus extra space just in case. There will also be storage space for feed, and the fridge I ordered.
The quail lay so many eggs each day already, and there are thirty chicks soon to become additional contributors. It is past time to combine all of the runs and give this some dedicated space. Also, it will offer additional protection against bird flu, which has affected mostly large turkey farms in Minnesota. A back yard flock or two as well.
I’m not building today, as it is going to rain. And building the floor caused me some pain. This rainy week, I’ll be doing the lighter work of building and painting beehives.
It turns out that both of my hives, not just one, made it through the winter. When I checked sugar cakes, there was a sleepy, steady buzz from both hives. With a new package of Carniolans coming, and with splits probably going to be necessary, the additional hives are much needed.
The greenhouse was steamy yesterday, reminding me that some seeds could even go into the raised garden beds outside at this time.
Things are super busy, as they are every single spring, but there are joyful moments by the dozen. Here’s one. The chicks got their first sand bath today. It was a hit!
