The last windchill temp I saw, before falling asleep last night, was -4°F. So frozen drinkers were not a surprise this morning.
I worried about how the quail would handle the cold, and the panel heaters were on. Since those types of heaters aren’t meant to heat the pen, it was just below 20°F in the coops.
The birds look fine this morning. Feet and all. I have enough drinkers to just bring fresh, non-frozen ones throughout the day. In the morning, the birds flock to the drinkers. I don’t worry much about water overnight, since they should be sleeping.
Rotating the drinkers out is my solution to frozen water, so far. I’m afraid the birds would jump into wide-open rubber pans, so those will be kept for the bees. What’s your preferred method of keeping water sources ice-free?
