Because I plan to sell quail eggs as soon as they start laying again, I ordered a few suitably-sized cartons. I didn’t expect them to be so adorably small!
The peanut is for comparison. And that is possibly the last egg that Mable will lay, for the season.
I have some string lights that I plan to put in each pen, on a timer. After the hens have had a winter break, I’ll start turning the lights on before sunrise, each day. That should keep the birds healthy while keeping the eggs coming for a longer time.
A dozen hatching eggs should be here this Thursday, and I’ll see if any hens come of those. It’s time to get serious about choosing which roosters to keep, and to add as many genetically diverse hens as can live comfortably here.
I definitely want to keep any and all rosetta’s, for the time being. Also, as many Grou Fees as will work. And it’s a given that I’m keeping all of my first hatch, which are in the aviary. If those roosters start fighting, I’ll have to figure out either where to move them (new pens? Maybe) or which to keep. Definitely Maddie’s pick will stay, as he’s the biggest and brightest, as well as fairly calm. Those are some very large, healthy birds.
The hens in that pen are so friendly, mostly. They expect to be petted, and to eat out of my hand. If it doesn’t happen fast enough, they peck at my pants cuffs and climb up on my boots. They don’t want to be picked up though. I look forward to hatching a lot of their eggs.
And to putting many in those adorable cartons!
