I finished this pen just in time, as some of the late-season hatches are ready to start getting used to the colder temps. It will be a little at a time, and with the help of a heater, no doubt. Just not so much that cold-weather feathers can’t grow in.
There is 1/4″ hardware cloth on every side, including the top and bottom. Only one of the roof panels is metal, so there is a sun and shade mix. The shelter is three feet wide and long, and the open run is five feet long. The bottom is several inches of sand, which quail love, and I’ll add straw to the coop, which they also love.
The pen is large enough to hang a Cozy Coop in the closed end, and the birds will need it. Some of my birds are going into their fourth week since they hatched, and some are about to hatch. If they can’t be very carefully acclimated before the temps make it unworkable, these birds will be watching TV and playing board games with us until spring. No, a late-season hatch won’t be a regular occurrence, going forward.
I do plan to throw together some sort of a pen that could go in the office or the basement, just in case. Dust will be an issue with that.
The quail in the other two pens are doing well. A brutally cold winter is predicted for us, and I’ve been getting their digs ready for it. The birds did go through a huge molt, and the oldest ones barely even consider using their shelter, even on thirty-some degree nights.
