Garlic Day

The garlic-planting ritual goes something like this. Pull out the spent crops, and loosen any compacted soil. Add and slightly mix in a fresh layer of compost. Thankfully, I have enough this year, so we’ve rounded a corner with that. Dig two inch deep trenches, and mix a sprinkling of bone meal into the bottoms. Luckily, I had just enough left to do this.

Place the cloves about four inches apart in the trenches. Yes, mine can be a tiny bit squishy for space, but not too bad.

Cover the cloves, and bed them down with a drink and several inches of straw. Remark that I need to get more straw, as it’s running kind of low. Know that “someone,” can’t answer with words, but is thinking about bringing me her ball to throw.

Straw covers the garlic bed.

When she brings the ball, torture her by making her wait while I snap a picture before throwing it. By the way, she loves to catch the ball in mid-air, and she’s very good at it.

Gracie brought the ball.

Yes, Miz Gracie does have her own sandbox, so she gets to dig in the garden too.

I treasure such a Garlic Day ritual. She’s helping me in the high tunnel greenhouse today too. It’s time for a fresh planting of kale and mustard greens.
