My coffee cup is nearly empty, and we should have a string of sunny days. Perfect for finishing the pallet quail run. I’ll build one out of better materials over time.
For now, it’ll be a walk-in run that will allow the thirteen baby quail and their parents to move a lot more. It should also be easier for me to maintain. Today, a little more paint on the outside (pallets – can’t expect a miracle), and hardware cloth on the inside and in the trench around the perimeter. Tomorrow, hopefully, additional chicken wire around the outside, and maybe starting on the double door I want to make.
The chicks are seriously adorable. They have long outgrown using lids with pebbles in them for water and food. They are actually starting to fly, and they’re getting their adult coloring. Their progress:
Out of nineteen eggs, if all continues to go well, I’ll have thirteen quail in addition to the seven I originally purchased. Exciting! I hope to have plenty of eggs during the next laying season to feed more than our family.
If only the veggies had done so well this year. Ah, well. At least we do have enough of most things for our family. Let’s hope for no drought next season.
