Coturnix Quail are turning out to be a joy to raise. I’m building an additional walk-in coop, so we can have more birds. That is for another post.
Even with my intolerance to chicken eggs, I can eat quail eggs. After many years of not eating eggs, I’ve been making up for it with fried eggs (hot sauce too!) and egg sandwiches nearly every other day. What a treat!
On most days, currently, all six of our hens lay eggs. One of the hens sometimes lays every other day, and here is why:
She sometimes lays 1 3/4″ eggs. Poor bird! The larger eggs have two yolks in them. I’m not sure if that is normal, but it’s a thing, anyway.
Quail eggs, though tiny, hold a lot of nutritional value compared to chicken eggs. Per weight, they contain more protein, iron, B12, etc.
Also, they taste good with a dab of hot sauce.
